A Transformational Journey

Dr Toula’s journey to Science, Spirit and Story for healing, and the creation of Story Image Therapy Shadow Work

Lived Experience

My work has been deeply shaped by my own experience of trauma as a teenager and later through working in high school leadership roles.

For many years, I carried significant responsibility while quietly navigating self-doubt and other adolescent patterns in what I now call our inner Dark Room in SIT.

To cope, I unconsciously drew upon three resources: Science, Spirit and Storytelling. Science provided structure and understanding. Spirit offered connection—to my inner self, to others and to the wider world. Storytelling created a safe way for me to explore difficult emotions in my inner Dream Room.

Today, as a clinical psychologist with personal experience of healing, I recognise that many people need approaches that go beyond talk and logic alone.

Story Image Therapy (SIT®) and SIT Shadow Work™ grew from this insight. They are now used to help others to move from their inner Dark Room to their Dream Room — whatever that is for them.

Sitting in the Dark Room

In Story Image Therapy (SIT®), the Dark Room represents the times in life when we feel overwhelmed, stressed, anxious, depressed or caught in conflict.

In the Dark Room, emotions take over.  Our thinking becomes reactive, and our body feels tense, tired or unsettled. Old wounds resurface and we can fall into familiar but unhealthy coping patterns.

We might cling to addictive thoughts, withdraw, people-please, become controlling, or repeat painful relationship dynamics.

Self-sabotage and trauma bonds—attachments formed through pain rather than safety—might also unconsciously repeat themselves.

The Dark Room is not a place of failure. It’s an inner knowing that something needs awareness, and when we move from the Dark Room into the Dream Room by using our connections, we don’t just survive the storm—we begin to truly understand it.

Connection in the Dream Room

In Story Image Therapy, healing begins with a connection to our true Self, and the knowledge shared by our ancestors.

This ancestral, spiritual, creative ‘space’ where we use our active imagination is what I call our inner Dream Room.

Connecting to the Self in our Dream Room means turning inward and becoming aware of our thoughts, emotions, body sensations and unconscious patterns.

Connecting to Spirit gives us meaning and purpose beyond daily stress. It strengthens hope, values and resilience during difficult times.

Connecting to Nature calms the nervous system and grounds us in the body. It reminds us that change and renewal are natural parts of life.

When Self, Spirit and Nature come together through creative visualisation and imagery, healing becomes a return to wholeness—mind, body and meaning aligned.
